Arctic Grayling

Thymallus arcticus

Artic Grayling are native to the northern latitudes of the United States and Canada. They were originally found in the headwaters of the Madison and Gibbon rivers, and have since been introduced throughout the state.

Arctic Grayling are a slender, silver-colored fish with coarse scales. However, the species is perhaps best known for their large dorsal fin which is reminiscent of a sailfish. During the spring spawning period, the dorsal fin of male fish becomes extremely colorful, showing off a variety of blue, green and red spots.

Arctic Grayling Habitat

Arctic Grayling prefer cold, clear lakes and streams. They are stocked in select waters throughout Wyoming, but stocking is subject to brood source availability. There are a handful of waters where the species became self-sustaining following an initial stocking event.
