AIS decal information

AIS decals are available on the Game and Fish website and from automated license-selling agents across Wyoming. When purchasing the decal, either on the Game and Fish website or at a license-selling agent, you will be given a receipt that will allow you to launch your watercraft in Wyoming for 30 business days. A permanent decal will be mailed to you.

Watercraft under 10 feet in length that are both inflatable and non-motorized are exempt from decal requirements. These watercraft present a very low risk for transporting AIS because they typically do not hold or transport water, do not have hard surfaces for quagga and zebra mussels to attach to and are not moored in the water long enough for quagga and zebra mussels to attach. These watercraft DO require inspections.

Water toys, defined as "a sailboard, float tube, kiteboard or any aid to swimming or fishing that is not designed primarily for navigation” are also exempt from the decal requirement. Paddleboards are included in this category and exempt from decal requirements but still require inspection.

Wyoming Game and Fish Commission regulation requires all watercraft (with few exceptions) to have a valid AIS decal prior to launching on or entering into the waters of Wyoming.

Decal requirements

AIS decals are valid for the calendar year.

Owners or operators of motorized watercraft required to purchase an Aquatic Invasive Species Decal shall display it on the starboard (right) side of the bow 6 inches left of and directly in line with the watercraft registration decal. Non-motorized watercraft owners or operators shall display the decal on the bow in such a manner that the decal shall be visible when the watercraft is underway. Only the Aquatic Invasive Species Decal which is currently valid shall be displayed.

Revenue from AIS decals helps fund the AIS program in Wyoming. These fees pay for prevention efforts such as educational programs, watercraft inspections, enforcement and implementation of AIS regulations.

Watercraft are required to purchase decals as they are the primary means through which AIS, especially zebra and quagga mussels, are transported and therefore pose the greatest risk for spreading AIS to and within Wyoming.

Yes, once you enter the waters of Wyoming you will need a decal and all applicable AIS rules and regulations will apply. For instance, if you launch your watercraft in another state and boat into Wyoming, you will need a Wyoming Aquatic Invasive Species decal once you enter the Wyoming portion of that water.
