SARATOGA — The Wyoming Game and Fish Department has lifted the voluntary fishing closures for the Encampment and North Platte rivers (Colorado state line to the Dugway Campground north of Interstate 80), effective immediately.
Game and Fish staff have continuously monitored stream conditions since the closures were announced. Recent cooler weather and rainfall has moderated water temperatures in the Platte Valley and forecasts indicate a continuing cooling trend, eliminating the immediate stress on local trout populations.
“We’d like to thank anglers for their compliance with the voluntary closures”, said Caroline Rosinski, Laramie Region fisheries biologist. “Seeing and hearing from anglers who not only stopped fishing themselves, but also helped spread the word about the closures to others is a testament to the care folks have for this resource. We’re happy to see conditions improving and look forward to seeing anglers back on the rivers this fall.”
Responsible Angling Reminders
While conditions have improved, water temperatures will continue to fluctuate. Game and Fish reminds anglers to remain mindful of water temperatures throughout the remainder of the summer and fall:
- Check Water Temps - Carry a pocket stream thermometer. If stream temperatures begin approaching 70°F, anglers should pause catch-and-release fishing for the day.
- Land Them Fast - Minimize fight time to prevent fish exhaustion.
- Keep 'Em Wet - Keep fish submerged in the water while removing hooks, ideally using barbless hooks.
