CASPER, Wyo. — The Wyoming Game and Fish Department has lifted the voluntary afternoon fishing closure on the North Platte River downstream of the Lusby Public Access Area, and on Deer Creek through the Deer Creek PAA effective immediately.
Game and Fish biologists have continuously monitored stream conditions since implementing the voluntary closure in late July. Recent cooler weather across the Casper region has lowered water temperatures, and forecasts indicate a continuing overnight cooling trend that eliminates immediate stress on local trout populations.
"Cooler nighttime temperatures have brought water conditions back into a safe range for trout, so anglers can resume afternoon fishing," said Matt Hahn, Casper Region fisheries supervisor. "We truly appreciate the angling community's cooperation this summer. Pausing fishing during the hottest hours played a big role in protecting our local fishery."
Responsible Angling Reminders
While conditions have improved, water temperatures will continue to fluctuate. Game and Fish reminds anglers to remain mindful of water temperatures throughout the remainder of the late summer and fall:
- Check Water Temps: Carry a pocket stream thermometer. If stream temperatures begin approaching 70°F, anglers should pause catch-and-release fishing for the day.
- Land Them Fast: Minimize fight time to prevent fish exhaustion.
- Keep 'Em Wet: Keep fish submerged in the water while removing hooks, ideally using barbless hooks.
