The Wyoming Game and Fish Department has lifted voluntary fishing closures for Muddy Guard Reservoir #1 and the North Sayles ponds on the Bud Love Wildlife Management Area, effective immediately.

Game and Fish staff have continuously monitored stream conditions since the closures were announced in mid-July. Recent cooler weather has moderated water temperatures across the area and forecasts indicate a continuing cooling trend, minimizing the immediate stress on local trout populations.

With the recent cooler weather, Game and Fish anticipates stream temperatures to drop to safer levels for trout, allowing for catch-and-release fishing to resume. 

“We appreciate the local fishing community’s cooperation over the last month and we encourage anglers to continue to check water temperatures over the coming weeks,” said Stephen Siddons, Sheridan Region fisheries supervisor.

Responsible Angling Reminders

While conditions have improved, water temperatures will continue to fluctuate. Game and Fish reminds anglers to remain mindful of water temperatures throughout the remainder of the fall:

Check Water Temps: Carry a pocket stream thermometer. If stream temperatures begin approaching 70°F, anglers should pause catch-and-release fishing for the day.

Land Them Fast: Minimize fight time to prevent fish exhaustion.

Keep 'Em Wet: Keep fish submerged in the water while removing hooks, ideally using barbless hooks.
