CODY- The Wyoming Game and Fish Department has lifted voluntary fishing closures for the Bighorn River, effective immediately.

Game and Fish staff have continuously monitored stream conditions since the closures were announced in early August. Recent cooler weather has moderated water temperatures across the Big Horn Basin and forecasts indicate a continuing cooling trend, minimizing the immediate stress on local trout populations.

With the recent cooler weather, Game and Fish anticipates stream temperatures to drop to safer levels for trout, allowing for catch-and-release fishing to resume. “We are grateful to the local fishing community for their cooperation over the last month and we encourage folks to continue to check water temperatures over the coming weeks,” said Sam Hochhalter, Cody Region fisheries supervisor.

Responsible Angling Reminders

While conditions have improved, water temperatures will continue to fluctuate. Game and Fish reminds anglers to remain mindful of water temperatures throughout the remainder of the summer and fall:

Check Water Temps: Carry a pocket stream thermometer. If stream temperatures begin approaching 70°F, anglers should pause catch-and-release fishing for the day.

Land Them Fast: Minimize fight time to prevent fish exhaustion.

Keep 'Em Wet: Keep fish submerged in the water while removing hooks, ideally using barbless hooks.
