Jackson Region to host virtual public meeting on proposed changes to Targhee Elk and Palisades Mountain Goat herd objectives
JACKSON – The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is seeking public input on proposed changes to the management objectives for the Targhee Elk Herd Unit (Hunt Area 73) and the Palisades Mountain Goat Herd Unit (Hunt Areas 2 and 4).
A virtual public meeting will be held on August 5 at 7 p.m. to discuss the proposed changes and gather feedback from the public. Attendees will have the opportunity to learn about the history, management challenges, and current status of both herds, as well as the specifics of the proposed objective changes. To participate in the meeting, please use this Zoom link.
In addition to the meeting, the Jackson Region encourages anyone interested in the proposed objectives to complete this survey. The information collected from both the meeting and the survey will assist wildlife managers in making decisions about these proposed changes, which will be presented to the Game and Fish Commission at their September 9-10 meeting in Lander.
Objective reviews are conducted every five years to help Department personnel make informed decisions about managing wildlife populations.
The Targhee Elk Herd
The Targhee Elk Herd Unit covers the western slope of the Teton Range and primarily includes lands within the Caribou-Targhee National Forest, specifically in the Jedediah Smith and Winegar Hole Wilderness Areas. The proposed revision seeks to change the management objective from a hunter satisfaction-based approach to a post-season population objective. Beginning in 2025, the Department will eliminate all landowner and hunter satisfaction-based objectives for elk populations statewide, transitioning to post-season population objectives for those respective herd units.
The Palisades Mountain Goat Herd
The Palisades Mountain Goat Herd Unit is located in the Snake River Range and on the western slope of the Teton Mountain Range. This area includes portions of the Caribou-Targhee and Bridger-Teton National Forests, as well as the Palisades Wilderness Study Area. The proposed revision aims to change the population objective and remove Hunt Area 4 from the herd unit.
More information regarding the proposed changes for the Targhee Elk and Palisades Mountain Goat herds can be found on the Jackson Region Game and Fish webpage.
