Laramie -

Pheasant hunters have plenty of opportunities to hunt birds in southeast Wyoming this season, with the Springer Special Pheasant Hunt beginning Thursday, Oct. 17 and the Glendo Special Season and the regular season both opening Saturday, Nov. 2.

As in years past, pheasants raised at the Downar Game Bird Farm will be released each day at the Springer/Bump Sullivan Wildlife Habitat Management Area (WHMA) during the Springer Special Hunt, and twice a week at Glendo State Park during that special hunt. During the regular season, birds will be released at Springer/Bump Sullivan WHMA, Table Mountain WHMA, Glendo State Park, as well as the following Walk-In Areas as long as adequate cover remains: Goshen County Walk-In Areas 24, 29, and 63, Platte County Walk-In Areas 20, and Laramie County Walk-In Areas 21 & 26. Birds will not be released on Platte County Walk-In Area 23 or Laramie County Walk-In Area 34 for the 2019 season due to lack of cover.

Laramie County Walk-In Area 26 near Albin is a new release site this year. https://wgfd.wyo.gov/Public-Access/Walk-In-Hunting/Laramie-County/Laramie-County-Walk-In-Area-26. The area offers exceptional cover on one quarter section. The property is small, and with cover as high as many adults, hunters are urged to use extreme caution when hunting, to avoid crowding other hunters, and to ensure safe backstops when shooting. Please hunt cooperatively if other groups are already hunting on the property. Waiting to hunt or returning in a few hours will likely be just as successful, and will certainly offer a better quality hunt.

The Springer Special Hunt begins Oct. 17 and will run through Nov. 1. Two dates, Oct.19 and Oct. 27, are reserved for youth under 18. Pheasants are stocked each day for the special 16-day season. Even though a hunter may not draw a permit on a particular day, openings may be available and hunters can access the Springer unit by signing up on the stand-by list posted at the check station. All hunters must check in and out at the Springer Check Station during the dates of the Springer special pheasant hunt.

The Glendo hunt in Hunt Area 9 runs from Nov. 2 through Dec. 31. Youth-only hunts are held on Sundays, Nov. 3, 10, 17 and 24. Glendo permits are required to hunt pheasants in Hunt Area 9 on each Friday, Saturday and Monday during the open season in November. Glendo permits are not required to hunt pheasants in Hunt Area 9 on other days during the open season. There is no check station at the Glendo hunt. However, hunters must have the proper permit in their possession during permitted days.

Hunters are reminded that in addition to appropriate licensing, hunter education requirements, and a conservation stamp, a $15.50 pheasant special management permit is required for all ages for the Springer and Glendo hunts. A state park permit is also required for the Glendo hunt locations other than the County Line area.

Additional information on pheasant hunting and maps of the walk-in areas can be found at wgfd.wyo.gov/regulations.  Hunters can call the Game and Fish at (307) 777-4600 for more information.
