Greys River is a winter-feeding ground one mile south of Alpine along Wyoming Highway 89.  Most of the land consists of steep, west-facing slopes covered with a mixture of aspen, conifers and shrubs.  Natural springs are abundant.  A rich habitat exists for songbirds, owls, hawks, grouse and small mammals.  More than 1,000 elk are fed here each year and can be observed from the highway.

Feedgrounds were established in this area to substitute for natural winter range lost to human development and to prevent elk from competing with domestic livestock for winter hay.  About 1,000 elk use this feedground.  Although there is no substitute for natural habitat for sustaining healthy populations for wildlife, agricultural practices have created the need for an artificial feedground.

Feedground managers must keep a handle on the number of elk and how many the environment can sustain.  The concentration of elk increases the incidence of disease and managers must practice aggressive brucellosis eradication measures.

Mule deer, moose, black bears, blue and ruffed grouse also live in the area.  Deer, elk and ruffed grouse hunting is excellent; however, elk hunting in this area is by special permit only.  Sightseeing and hiking opportunities are excellent.  The management area provides access to the Salt River Range of the Bridger-Teton National Forest.  Hiking only a few miles will provide picturesque views of Palisades Reservoir, the Salt River and the Greys River.

This WHMA lies within bear country, please visit our bear wise page for information on recreating in bear country -

Camping limit is 14 days. Motor vehicles are allowed on roads marked with a white arrow.
