Greys River Wildlife Habitat Management Area (WHMA) is a winter elk feedground one mile south of Alpine, WY along Wyoming Highway 89. Most of the land consists of steep, west-facing slopes covered with a mixture of aspen, conifers and shrubs. Natural springs are abundant. A rich habitat exists for songbirds, owls, hawks, grouse and small mammals. More than 1,000 elk are fed here each year to prevent damage and conflict with neighboring private lands and can be observed from the highway. Mule deer, moose, Black bears, mountain grouse also live in the area. Deer, elk and ruffed grouse hunting is excellent; however, elk hunting in this area is by special permit only. Sightseeing and hiking opportunities are excellent. The management area provides access to the Salt River Range of the Bridger-Teton National Forest. Hiking only a few miles will provide picturesque views of Palisades Reservoir, the Salt River and the Greys River. This WHMA lies within bear country, please visit our bear wise page for information on recreating in bear country -https://wgfd.wyo.gov/Wildlife-in-Wyoming/More-Wildlife/Large-Carnivore/Grizzly-Bear-Management/Bear-Wise-Wyoming.
