Black Butte Wildlife Habitat Management Area (WHMA) is located approximately 28 miles northwest of Pinedale, WY and was established in December 1977 as part of the elk feedground system to limit damage by elk on private lands. Black Butte provides quality winter range for up to 500 elk and a feedground. Vegetative communities on the 520 acres of Wyoming Game and Fish Commission owned land consists mostly of sagebrush grasslands with aspen and conifer stands in the higher elevations. Besides providing habitat for elk, Black Butte is home to Pronghorn, Sage grouse, moose, bears, rabbits, coyotes and many songbirds. The area was purchased solely for elk feeding and wildlife winter range. Pedestrian access is available through the adjacent BLM parcel only. The CDK road is open for administrative use only and is closed to the public. Black Butte was purchased with deed restrictions that prohibit hunting on the WHMA.
