Small game hunting opportunities continue, remember your license for cottontail rabbits
The hunting season for cottontails opens September 1 and closes March 1.
“Hunting cottontail rabbits can be a great way to introduce young people to hunting and with the abundance of cottontail rabbits observed in many areas of Wyoming during the fall of 2015 hunting opportunities should be plentiful,” said Bud Stewart, Information and Education Specialist in the Sheridan region.
Before heading out to hunt cottontail rabbits get a small game license for anyone 14 years of age and older. Wyoming resident hunters 13 years of age and younger can hunt cottontail rabbits without a small game license, provided they have successfully completed a certified hunter safety course.
The daily bag limit for cottontails is 10 and the possession limit is 20.
The shooting hours for small game animals are ½ hour before sunrise to ½ hour after sunset. It is illegal to hunt small game with the aid of artificial light.
Additional information on cottontail rabbit or other small game hunting can be obtained by contacting the Wyoming Game Fish Department website at wgfd.wyo.gov or by calling or visiting a Game and Fish Office.
