Take a kid fishing, create a memory of a lifetime
Wyoming Game and Fish Department fisheries staff help kids hone their fishing skills at the Maury Brown kids fishing day outside of Cheyenne in June 2024.

A friend recently asked me about my favorite childhood Christmas gift. While I couldn't recall a specific material object, the question sparked a deeper reflection on what truly matters. I realized my most cherished memories are centered on people and experiences rather than things.

As I get older, I feel a growing desire to prioritize experiences that will truly influence who my son becomes. Looking at my own life, I have many fond memories of being outdoors: fishing with my dad at the local state park, trapping with my older brother and even the time all six of us had to sleep in our van during a thunderstorm while camping. These adventures exposed me to wildlife, created a desire to protect it and provided a foundation of treasured memories and values that I still carry today.

I believe providing these outdoor experiences for children is one of the most effective ways to pass along a love for wildlife and preserve our outdoor heritage. Spending time in nature fosters a connection to the environment and a sense of stewardship that lasts a lifetime. Whether it is the patience developed while waiting for a bite or the confidence gained from a successful catch, fishing offers invaluable lessons in ecology, sustainability and personal achievement.

There also is an intrinsic joy in sharing these moments. Watching a child observe dragonflies on the water or catch their first fish provides a sense of purpose that is hard to find elsewhere. By taking the time to slow down and observe our surroundings, we are not just teaching a skill; we are creating an understanding and appreciation for the natural world. I challenge you to share what you love and grow our next generation of wildlife enthusiasts.

A great opportunity to do this is the Free Fishing Day throughout Wyoming on June 6. Residents and nonresidents can fish anywhere in Wyoming without a state fishing license or conservation stamp, with some restrictions in certain areas. All other fishing regulations, such as creel limits, size restrictions and gear requirements, remain in effect. I encourage you to contact one of our offices to find out more about this special event.

I hope you can take a kid fishing, enjoy the open spaces Wyoming has to offer and make some memories.
