PINEDALE - The Wyoming Game and Fish Department has lifted the voluntary afternoon fishing closure for the Green and New Fork rivers and North Horse Creek, effective immediately.

Game and Fish staff have continuously monitored stream conditions since the closures were announced in late July. Recent cooler weather has moderated water temperatures across the Pinedale region and forecasts indicate a continuing cooling trend, eliminating the immediate stress on local trout populations.

“With the recent cooler weather, afternoon stream temperatures have dropped to safer levels for trout, allowing for catch-and-release fishing to resume,” said Hilda Sexauer, Pinedale Region Fisheries Supervisor. “We are grateful to the fishing community for its diligence and cooperation in protecting our local trout populations during the high temperatures we faced this summer.”

Responsible Angling Reminders

While conditions have improved, water temperatures will continue to fluctuate. Game and Fish reminds anglers to remain mindful of water temperatures throughout the remainder of the summer and fall:

  • Check Water Temps: Carry a pocket stream thermometer. If stream temperatures begin approaching 70°F, anglers should pause catch-and-release fishing for the day.
  • Land Them Fast: Minimize fight time to prevent fish exhaustion.
  • Keep 'Em Wet: Keep fish submerged in the water while removing hooks, ideally using barbless hooks.
  • Stay Updated: Visit the Wyoming Game and Fish Fishing in the Heat webpage for tips on protecting trout in warm weather and statewide voluntary closures.
