Game and Fish invites boaters and anglers to have a fun, safe Fourth of July

CASPER — Independence Day is the ultimate celebration of summer, making it the most popular weekend of the year for Wyoming boaters to enjoy the water. To support a safe and enjoyable environment at Alcova Reservoir, Pathfinder Reservoir, and along the North Platte River, the Game and Fish advises boaters to become familiar with boating regulations involving the operation of watercraft and required safety equipment.

If this is your first time launching, here is what you need to know to ensure a safe, smooth, and successful holiday on the water.

Don’t Booze and Boat

Choosing a designated, sober boat operator is the best way to ensure a relaxing trip for your entire group. When a focused individual takes the helm, passengers can fully kick back and enjoy the sun, angling and beautiful views with total peace of mind. It is also helpful to keep in mind that the Wyoming sun, wind, and waves naturally amplify the physical effects of fatigue and alcohol.

Your Holiday Launch Checklist

A little preparation at the boat ramp goes a long way toward keeping your holiday smooth and uninterrupted. Checking these essential safety items off your list before you head out ensures you have everything you need for a perfect day:

  • Life jackets: Ensure a properly fitted, approved personal flotation device is on board for every passenger. To keep our youngest boaters safe and secure, youth 12 years and under just need to wear their life jacket while the watercraft is underway.
  • Accessible throwable devices: If your watercraft is over 16 feet, keep an approved Coast Guard throwable device (like a cushion or ring buoy) close at hand.
  • Fire extinguisher: Double-check that your fire extinguisher is functional and fully charged if your boat features enclosed fuel compartments, inboard engines, or permanent fuel tanks.
  • Navigation lighting for the fireworks: Planning to stay out late for the fireworks? Make sure your red/green bow lights and 360-degree white stern lights are working clearly from sunset to sunrise.
  • Registration: Keep your day running smoothly by ensuring your boat registration and 2026 AIS decal are up to date. This applies to all vessels powered by propulsion machinery, including electric trolling motors, and helps us protect Wyoming's pristine waters.

By practicing a few simple, smart safety habits, we can all look out for one another and ensure a memorable, fun-filled Fourth of July.
