CODY - The Cody Region of the Wyoming Game and Fish Department welcomes Levi Wood as the new South Cody game warden. Wood replaces Grant Gerharter who was promoted to regional wildlife supervisor in Cody.
Wood began his career as a game warden with Game and Fish in 2017 and served in Green River, Alpine, Gillette and most recently, Saratoga. Prior to his service as a game warden, Wood worked as a fisheries technician and hunt management coordinator in the Laramie region. Before his employment with Game and Fish, he worked as a field biologist and lab technician with the Wyoming Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit housed at the University of Wyoming studying sagebrush obligate song bird species.
“The South Cody game warden district offers some of the most unique wildlife resources in the state, and I am excited to be a part of managing that resource,” Wood said. “The vast amount of backcountry within the district is also a big part of what attracted me to the area. Maintaining a presence in the backcountry is extremely important and getting the opportunity to spend time in some of the most beautiful country in the world on horseback is something I look forward to.”
Wood said he is also looking forward to getting to know the landowners and the public in the Cody area. “Building good relationships is key to wildlife management as well as law enforcement. Without these relationships our jobs can be extremely difficult. I'm looking forward to becoming a part of a community that I know has a true passion for wildlife,” Wood said.
Wood earned a bachelor's degree in Wildlife and Fisheries Biology and Management from the University of Wyoming. He plays competitive hockey in his free time and enjoys working with horses and as much hunting and fishing as time allows.
The South Cody game warden district is situated south and west of Cody and encompasses the Southfork of the Shoshone River drainage, portions of Buffalo Bill Reservoir and the vast backcountry of the Thorofare. Wood began game warden duties in the South Cody district in March.
