Salvaging Illegal Elk
Anyone who has field dressed and packed out a bull elk knows it is no small chore. North Pinedale Game Warden Bubba Haley recently dealt with a case of a nonresident hunter from Montana who had killed two bull elk in South Gypsum Creek, in Hunt Area 95 north of Pinedale. The hunter had field dressed and quartered a 6x6 bull, but dragged the second smaller bull down the hill and tried to hide it under a log. Another hunter witnessed the event and reported it to the Wyoming Game and Fish Department's Stop Poaching hotline. Warden Haley responded to the call and caught up with the nonresident hunter as he was packing out the 6x6 bull. When confronted, he admitted to killing an over limit of elk. Warden Haley issued the individual a citation and siezed the 6x6 bull. Warden Haley then had the job of recovering the second elk that had been illegally taken and packing it out. Often, this significant task of getting illegally taken game out of the backcountry goes unnoticed. The meat was donated to a local family in need.
