Wildlife and Outdoor Recreation Celebration this Saturday

In honor of National Hunting and Fishing Day the Wyoming Game and Fish Department and Sportsman’s Warehouse have teamed up to host Cheyenne’s First Annual Wildlife and Outdoor Recreation Celebration.

The event will be held at Lion’s Park in Cheyenne and will include activities for the entire family. Kids and adults can try their luck at fishing, practice casting, test their skills in wildlife identification, participate in a nature-themed scavenger hunt, learn about fish and their habitat needs, and learn survival skills and safety. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will be held on the southeast side of Sloan's Lake. All activities are free and open to people of all ages.

“Bring your family and learn a new outdoor skill. Whether you’re looking to improve your cast or learn more about Wyoming wildlife, we have something fun for you,” said Rebekah Fitzgerald, Game and Fish communications and outreach supervisor.

The inception of the National Hunting and Fishing Day began in the 1960s when hunters and anglers became discouraged that many people didn't understand the crucial role that sportsmen and women play in the wildlife conservation. On May 2, 1972, President Nixon signed the first proclamation of National Hunting and Fishing Day, writing, “I urge all citizens to join with outdoor sportsmen in the wise use of our natural resources and in insuring their proper management for the benefit of future generations.” By late summer, all 50 governors and more than 600 mayors had joined in by proclaiming state and local versions of National Hunting and Fishing Day.

Celebrated the fourth Saturday of every September, National Hunting and Fishing Day remains the most effective grassroots efforts ever undertaken to promote the outdoor sports and conservation. In Wyoming, the right to hunt, fish and trap is part of the state constitution.
