Wild turkey licenses still within reach
Even if you missed the application deadline for spring turkey licenses, there is still a chance to purchase a general license and/or leftover Type 3 licenses. Turkey hunting can be a great family activity and is also a fun way for new hunters to get into the field.
Hunters who entered the spring turkey draw can find out if they were successful on Game and Fish’s website.
Anyone who did not enter the draw or were unsuccessful can consider all of Wyoming’s five wild turkey hunt areas offer general license hunting opportunity in the spring. Two of these areas (Hunt Area 2 and 3) also provide hunters the ability to harvest an additional turkey or two on Limited Quota, Type 3 licenses. General wild turkey licenses and remaining Type 3 licenses, which are available “first come first served,” may be purchased through Wyoming Game and Fish Department’s online electronic license system or from any license agent until the close of the hunting season.
For both spring and fall seasons, after the license draw, a hunter may apply for and receive up to three wild turkey licenses provided at least two of those licenses are limited quota Type 3 licenses. During the spring season, hunters are reminded they may only harvest male wild turkeys or any wild turkey with a visible beard.
“Many hunters I talk to during the wild turkey harvest survey process are not aware that they can have more than one license each season, in the spring and then again in the fall,” said Gail Sheridan, Game and Fish harvest survey coordinator.
Hunters can only apply for and receive one license through the drawing. Additional licenses must be purchased afterwards.
Game and Fish’s wildlife biologist who coordinates wild turkey hunting seasons in Wyoming, Joe Sandrini, notes that, “While hunters may have the ability to harvest a second or third bird on a Type 3 license, almost all of the turkeys in hunt areas where those tags are valid are found on private land. So, a hunter should get permission to hunt before buying one of these licenses.”
