Hunters who had tissue samples collected from their deer, elk, or moose this hunting season for chronic wasting disease testing can easily check the results of those tests on the Wyoming Game and Fish Department’s website. Results from the department’s Wildlife Health Lab are typically available within three weeks.

Hunters can check their results using the six-digit specimen submission number for their sample. This is the number provided by the Game and Fish when the sample was taken in the field and is located on a white label with a barcode. Alternatively, hunters can also use their sportsperson’s ID number or their last name, zip code, and date of birth.

“Game and Fish really appreciates all hunters who submit samples. These samples play a very important role in taking on this disease,” said Scott Edberg, deputy chief of the Wildlife Division.

Hunters whose animals test positive for CWD will be notified by mail. Hunters with CWD positive animals may dispose of the meat without violating any laws concerning the waste of game meat. Meat should be properly disposed of in an approved municipal landfill. Hunters whose animals do not test positive will not be notified.

Hunters who want to have their animal tested for CWD outside of Wyoming Game & Fish surveillance efforts may may do so at the Wyoming State Veterinary Laboratory or Colorado State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory.
