Thanks for asking. Some people don't know, but the Wyoming Game and Fish Department is the issuing authority for boat registrations in the State of Wyoming. State boat registration programs are governed by federal rules enacted by the United States Coast Guard.

Recent changes in Coast Guard rules mandate that, beginning in 2017, states verify that boats have a valid hull identification number (HIN) prior to registering a boat or renewing a registration. To get ahead of the 2017 deadline and comply with these rule changes Game and Fish sent letters to the owners of Wyoming registered boats that do not have a HIN on file with Game and Fish and to boat owners whose HIN appears to be of an improper format according to federal rules.

If you received one of these letters, there are two ways for Game and Fish to verify your HIN and get ahead of rule change. You may complete the form included with the letter and send photos of your boat registration number and HIN number to the Cheyenne Headquarters. Or you may schedule a HIN inspection at a Game and Fish regional office or other law enforcement agency and send the inspection form to the Cheyenne Headquarters. Verifying this information will insure Game and Fish has your correct HIN on file and you can continue to register your boat after 2017. Feel free to call for further clarification.
