KEMMERER — The Wyoming Department of Transportation and Wyoming Game and Fish Department invite the public to attend a groundbreaking ceremony for the U.S. Highway 189 Kemmerer South Wildlife Crossing Project. The event will take place at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, at the turnout located at mile marker 12.8 on U.S. 189 south of Kemmerer.

The Kemmerer South Wildlife Crossing Project is a vital effort that will enhance public safety and protect Wyoming’s iconic wildlife. Funded by a $24.3 million federal grant and an additional $8.8 million in partner contributions, the project will construct seven underpasses, one overpass and fencing along a 30-mile stretch of highway. This initiative, which was awarded to Oftedal Construction, Inc. in 2025, is anticipated to eliminate 80-90% of wildlife-vehicle collisions along this corridor once completed in October 2027. The crossing will benefit the Wyoming Range and Uinta deer herds, as well as the Carter Lease pronghorn herd.

The ceremony will include a short presentation, followed by an opportunity for photos and media interviews. Parking will be available at the turnout, but carpooling is recommended to reduce congestion. Attendees should dress for Wyoming weather and wear appropriate footwear. Safety vests will be provided.

Livestream Information: The event will be livestreamed on the Wyoming Game and Fish Department's Facebook and Youtube pages. In the event a livestream is not feasible, the ceremony will be filmed and made available on the WYDOT and WGFD websites following the event.
