JACKSON – The Wyoming Game and Fish Department will be implementing a planned drawdown of water levels at Blue Heron Reservoir, located within the South Park Wildlife Habitat Management Area, this spring. This initiative aims to enhance the habitat quality for waterfowl and shorebirds.
The reservoir's water levels will be lowered and maintained at a low level throughout the spring migration period. This temporary reduction in water levels mimics the natural wet and dry cycles of wetland environments, which are crucial for promoting the growth and vitality of emergent vegetation.
While the reservoir's water levels will be significantly reduced, it will not completely dry out due to the system's design, which allows for continuous water flow. Water levels will be restored in late spring to early summer.
The South Park WHMA is currently closed to all human presence due to winter wildlife closures, but will reopen to the public on May 1 at 6 a.m.
