LANDER – The Wyoming Game and Fish Department recently opened a new public access area east of Lander. The Popo Agie Public Access Area provides a new and improved opportunity for anglers and outdoor recreationists to enjoy the Popo Agie River.
The new access site is located off Wyoming Highway 789, west of Country Garden Lane and east of Lander, and includes a newly-constructed road and parking area on the west side of the state land parcel owned by the Office of State Lands and Investments (OSLI).
Craig Amadio, former Lander Region fisheries supervisor, initiated the idea for the Popo Agie PAA to develop direct access to the river and surrounding state land, creating a more convenient entry point for the public while respecting the needs of the existing agricultural lessee.
“This project is a win-win solution for everyone involved,” said Brian Rognon, Game and Fish lands administrator. “It improves angler access to a great stretch of the Popo Agie and ensures that the existing grazing operation on the state land can continue without interference. We’re grateful for the partnerships that made this possible.”
The road and parking improvements were constructed by Game and Fish with support from OSLI and funding from both agencies.
The project also was supported and funded by the Popo Agie Anglers, the local chapter of Trout Unlimited, who are dedicated to conserving and enhancing coldwater fisheries in the region.
"The Popo Agie Anglers are excited to fund and support Popo Agie fishing access for the Lander and Hudson communities," said Popo Agie Angler President Peter Cella. "Having additional access areas is increasingly important as the popularity of fishing increases in our region."
