Mourning dove banding at Amsden Creek WHMA
Game and Fish personnel trapped and placed leg bands on 20 mourning doves this summer at Amsden Creek Wildlife Habitat Management Area.
The trapping effort, which took place in July and August, was part of a statewide effort to capture and band at least 391 doves. Since 2007, 1,911 doves have been banded in Wyoming.
Small metal cages were baited with food and captured doves were carefully removed, with their age, gender and molt stage recorded. Before release, each was fitted with a small metal leg band with a unique identification number. Banded birds that are harvested or recaptured later will provide data for wildlife managers on dove distribution, population estimates, movements, survival rates and cause of death.
