Sinks Canyon is a rugged canyon at the eastern base of the southern Wind River Mountains. Located approximately eight (8) miles southwest of Lander, WY. The canyon is named for a unique geologic formation, “The Sinks,” where the Middle Fork of the Popo Agie River vanishes underground near the mouth of the canyon, only to reemerge approximately ¼ mile downstream. Vegetatively Sinks Canyon is part of a magnificent ecosystem that stretches from the sagebrush and juniper covered foothills, through mixed Douglas fir conifer forests on the north facing slopes and aspen meadows. Sinks Canyon is known for its dazzling variety of wildflowers and other herbaceous plants. Sinks Canyon provides habitat for moose, elk and deer, as well as a variety of non-game wildlife and birds, including peregrine falcons. While the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission owns Sinks Canyon WHMA, this area is managed as Sinks Canyon State Park by the Wyoming State Parks, Historic Sites and Trails.
