Waterfowl hunters: 2017-18 duck stamps now available at post offices
A trio of Canada geese are ready to fly onto the back of the game bird licenses of the 6,000-plus Wyoming waterfowl hunters. Duck and goose hunters are alerted the 2017-18 Migratory Waterfowl Hunting and Conservation Stamp, or federal “duck stamp” is now available at post offices across the Cowboy State. The duck stamp is a requirement to hunt migratory waterfowl.

“The federal duck stamp is one of the most efficient conservation programs in the country,” says Nate Huck, the Wyoming Game and Fish Department’s waterfowl biologist.”Ninety-eight cents of every dollar spent goes to purchase habitat or acquire conservation easements for protection.”

James Hautman’s acrylic painting of the three flying geese silhouetted against a sunrise bested 152 other entries for the honor of being this season’s duck stamp. The Chaska, Minnesota artist also won the duck stamp contest in 1991, 1995, 1999 and 2011, tying him with his brother, Joseph, for winning the most duck stamp contests.

Since the program began in 1934 it has raised $950 million to conserve 6 million acres of habitat at national wildlife refuges and waterfowl production areas across the country. All waterfowl hunters 16 and older are required to carry a signed duck stamp. The stamp also allows holders to visit national wildlife refuges for free.

“Duck stamps are a vital tool for wetland conservation,” Huck adds.”I also encourage birders and other outdoor enthusiasts to purchase a federal duck stamp to benefit waterfowl and other wildlife species.”
In addition to post offices, some sporting good stores also sell the $25-duck stamp and the stamp can also be
purchased online.
