Wyoming is bear country and being “Bear Aware” is the best way to prevent encounters and conflicts between humans and bears. Here are some ways you can stay safe while having fun:
  • When recreating in bear country, you do NOT want to surprise a bear. Make noise to alert bears of your presence. If they hear you coming they will most likely leave the area and be  out of your way.
  • Always carry bear spray when recreating in bear country.
  • Avoid recreating alone in the outdoors. Groups of three to four people are intimidating to bears.
  • Stay on main trails; bears make day beds in heavy dark timber away, which is usually away from areas with human activity.
  • Avoid hiking around dusk and dawn. Bears are active during twilight hours.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and learn what indicates the presence of bears; look for bear sign such as tracks, scat, and rolled rocks.
  • Avoid areas where there are seasonal food sources. For example, don’t hike through a thick berry patch in late August.
In most cases bears avoid people,  with most all encounters end with the bear  leaving the area without an conflict. However, it's important that you are “Bear Aware”. By taking these steps to prevent encounters, both you and bears can continue to enjoy the wild places that Wyoming has to offer.
