“Ray, how is the Game and Fish improving wildlife habitat on Wyoming Game and Fish Commission owned lands?”
There are 37 wildlife habitat management areas across Wyoming. These are owned by the Wyoming Game and Fish Commission. The majority of these lands were purchased to provide crucial winter range or habitat for certain species. For example, the Spence and Moriarty Wildlife Management Area (WMA) was purchased to provide winter range for elk and mule deer. On the Spence and Moriarty WMA we are currently updating the irrigation systems to be more efficient with our water usage, turning over old hay meadows and replanting to provide new forage for wildlife. We harvest the hay off these meadows to be feed on the elk feedgrounds. After the hay is harvested, we irrigate the meadows for regrowth and to provide a more palatable food source for wildlife then if we left the hay standing. Each year these meadows feed thousands of elk and deer. If anyone has any questions on habitat work we may be doing across the state on any of the 37 wildlife habitat management areas, please feel free to contact me at 307-777-4600.
