“Fishery” is a term that we as wildlife managers use to reference  a population of fish in an area that can be caught or harvested. To put it simply, it is a water--lake, river, stream or reservoir, that is managed so you can catch fish.

When we talk about fishing or managing fish, you’ll hear us use that term. For example, you  might hear us mention something like: “Due to increased spawning success this year, we expect the cutthroat fishery to show improvements in 2-3 years”. This means that we expect many more fish to hatch this year, and anglers will see more cutthroat in 2-3 years when those fish have grown large enough to be caught.
