Pilot Hill

Additional Information: Pilot Hill is a community-led initiative to preserve open space, enhance wildlife habitat, provide recreational opportunities and protect the Casper Aquifer. The WHMA consists of 3,076 acres on the southern portion with limited development (WHMA) and a recreation corridor of 4,010 acres on the northern portion with multiple bike and hiking trails. This WHMA was made possible with all the cooperative NGO’s and Agencies. OSLI acquired the lands from DDS Holdings, Pilot Peak, JHD Ranch, and Lodgepole Ranch. Albany County entered into a long term agreement with OSLI for open space and in turn, sub-leased the WHMA portion to the Game and Fish Commission. Pilot Hill is bordered by private land subdivision at the City of Laramie, a 4,010 acre recreation corridor to the north, Pole Mountain section of the Medicine Bow National Forest to the east, and Interstate 80 along the south. The current habitat consists of short and mixed grass prairie with sagebrush at lower elevations, montane shrublands at mid elevations, and spruce, limber pine, conifers, and aspen communities at higher elevations. Several draws traverse the property with shrubs, conifers, limestone rock outcroppings and cliffs.
