Coal Creek (a.k.a. Howland Creek) - Segment No. 1

Fishery: Native Bonneville cutthroat trout predominate through the reach. Numbers of fish were relatively low prior to the construction of a fish bypass structure near the mouth that was built by Trout Unlimited to allow up and downstream passage of all fish. Just as importantly, the structure has a screen that prevents fish in the stream from entering the irrigation diversion located here.

Heading Location: From the confluence with Sawmill Creek down to the confluence with the Smiths Fork River.

How to get there: Start in Cokeville and take highway 232 east out of town through the Smiths Fork valley for about 12 miles. The blacktop ends at the mouth of Coal Creek and the road forks. The Coal Creek segment begins here on the state school section and extends upstream 0.8 miles to its confluence with Sawmill Creek.
