Camp Creek/Horse Creek Wildlife Habitat Management Areas

Comprising 444 acres, these two wildlife habitat management areas are in the southwest corner of the Gros Ventre Range off U.S. Highway 189. This is historic elk winter range and more than 2,000 elk winter here. Damage to haystacks on adjacent property prompted the establishment of feedgrounds on both areas. More than 1,000 tons of hay are required to feed elk each winter.

Meandering streams, steep slopes, timbered ridges and scattered meadow bottoms provide rich habitat for many bird species. More than 35 species of birds have been identified in these areas. Grosbeaks, hummingbirds, swallows and tanagers are the most common species.

The land within and surrounding these areas are crucial winter habitat for more than 75 moose. A herd of about 40 bighorn sheep also finds much needed habitat on the rocky grasslands between Stinking Springs and Hoback Junction. The land adjacent to these areas provides sufficient food for blue and ruffed grouse and black bear.

Little and Big Horse creeks support populations of cutthroat and brook trout. Fishing in these creeks is fair. Excellent opportunities also exist for hiking, photography, and wildlife viewing. Public access is not available by vehicle.

These areas are closed each year from December 1 through April 30.
