Submit CWD Samples and Win Prizes

CWD in Wyoming

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) is a progressive, 100% fatal disease of deer, elk, moose and other cervids. In Wyoming, chronic wasting disease has been documented in 33 of 37 mule deer herds, all white-tailed deer herds, and 15 of 35 elk herds, and has continued to spread since first documented in 1985,

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department has established a CWD surveillance program to accurately estimate CWD prevalence in the State’s deer and elk herds.  The program focuses sampling efforts in two to three herd units within each of the eight WGFD regions each year, allowing for coverage of the entire state every four to five years.  To accurately determine prevalence and evaluate effectiveness of future management actions, at least 200 hunter-killed adult male deer or adult elk samples are needed from each targeted herd.

How do I take a CWD sample?

Win Hunting Gear

A hunting gear raffle is being offered to incentivize hunters to submit samples and to recognize the frontline role hunters play in battling this disease.

Hunters will be entered to win prizes if they provide a useable CWD sample(s) from an animal harvested in a focus or mandatory sampling area, with complete and accurate hunter and harvest information, from the appropriate tissue.

Winners will be drawn randomly by early March 2024.

Hunt Areas targeted for CWD sampling include:
