Laramie -

Laramie Region staff dedicated hundreds of hours to sampling hunter-harvested animals for chronic wasting disease (CWD). The data provide critical information on the structure, health and quality of big game herds. A new surveillance program allows us to better estimate changes in CWD prevalence, and includes a rotating suite of priority herds.

The Snowy Range elk herd and Sheep Mountain deer herd are the priority focus for the Laramie Region for 2019. Head boxes were provided to increase opportunities for hunters to submit samples. Hunters can submit the head of a harvested animal for testing by following the directions at the head-box station.

Thanks to hunter effort and regional staff, we met our target number of samples for the Sheep Mountain herd, and are on our way to reaching goals in the Snowy Range.
