Cody - Youth from across the Bighorn Basin are invited to participate in the upcoming Medicine Lodge Kids Outdoor Day- an exciting and fun filled day of outdoor activities on August 25 at Medicine Lodge State Archaeological Site in Hyattville.  Register by August 8 for a free t-shirt.

“This is a great opportunity for kids to get outside, have fun and learn a new outdoor skill,” said Tara Hodges, information and education specialist with the Game and Fish.

Participants will be divided into age groups, then rotate through six stations.   Children ages 8-10 will practice archery, cast fishing poles, shoot air rifles and learn about rockhounding, basic camping skills and macro invertebrates.  Kids ages 11-12 will shoot .22 rifles, pan for gold, throw atl atls, build lures and learn what it’s like to be an archaeologist.   Ages 13 and over will sharpen their shotgun skills, practice on a ropes course, cast fly rods and learn about flint knapping and birding.

Once again, the Little Explorers tent will offer children ages seven and under an opportunity to participate in self-guided activities with their parents that include coloring, making animal tracks and much more. The Little Explorers tent will be open 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

The event, co-sponsored by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department and Wyoming
State Parks, will take place at Medicine Lodge State Archaeological Site in Hyattville. Participants should be prepared to spend the entire day outdoors, bring plenty of drinking water and sunscreen and wear comfortable shoes.  Lunch will be provided.

Participants must pre-register and check-in between 7:30 a.m. to 8 a.m. August 25; activities will begin at 8:30 a.m. and conclude by 3:30 p.m.  Deadline for pre-registration is Wednesday, August 8.  Those that register by Aug. 8 will receive a free t-shirt at check-in.  Registration forms can be downloaded from the Game and Fish website or obtained by contacting the Cody Game and Fish office at 307-527-7125 or Medicine Lodge State Archaeological Site at 307-469-2234.  A $15 fee is due at time of registration.  Space is limited to 24 participants per age group and will be filled on a first registration basis.
