Topography and Vegetation: Mountainous forests and steep drainages. The elevation of the region ranges from a low of 6,200 feet to a high of 12,000 feet above sea level.
General Statement Regarding this Hunt Area: Mostly migratory elk from Yellowstone National Park, meaning weather (snow) dictates how many elk move through the area and when. It is very difficult to find elk outside of the wilderness, especially early in the season. This is a major constraint for non-residents wishing to hunt without hiring an outfitter. Hunting without horses and mules can make this hunt extremely challenging as well.
Additional Hunting Opportunities: Some mountain grouse (dusky and ruffed grouse) opportunities may exist in some parts of the area. Consult the Chapter 11 Upland Game Bird and Small Game Hunting Regulation for season dates, license requirements and bag/possession limits.
Herd Unit Job Completion Report: See the EL216 (Cody) Job Completion Report for more detailed information on the management of this elk herd.
