The Wyoming game warden career is celebrated as one of the most fascinating jobs in the West. Comprised of law enforcement, wildlife management and public outreach duties, it’s an exciting position that only around 50 people get to hold. To earn the honor of wearing the game warden badge, hopeful candidates need specialized backgrounds and a deep commitment to protecting Wyoming’s wildlife resource.

To be a game warden, you need these degrees and skills:

• A bachelor’s degree in wildlife management, range management, biology, zoology, ichthyology or other closely related field. Degrees such as criminal justice, education or outdoor recreation do not qualify.
• Drive and passion for wildlife and serving the public.
• A strong understanding of how wildlife and wild places are valued in Wyoming.
• Excellent interpersonal skills to interact with hunters and anglers, landowners, and recreationalists.

Game and Fish will open the application period for the game warden written exam in January. To qualify for the exam, applicants must hold or receive a bachelor’s degree (at minimum) by August 1, 2019. Applicants who pass the written exam may be offered an online interview later in April. Selected candidates from the online interview may move forward to an in-person interview in Cheyenne in May, where they will also be required to complete a psychological assessment, polygraph exam and job suitability profile. Hired wardens must then attend the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy.
