Cody - The Wyoming Game and Fish Department, Wyoming Outdoorsmen and a private landowner are partnering for a second year to offer first-time hunters a mentored hunting opportunity this fall.  We are currently accepting applications!

We are looking for kids ages 12-17 and adult women in the Bighorn Basin who are interested in learning how to hunt.

Selected applicants will be paired with a mentor who will guide them through all aspects of a hunt this fall for a doe white-tailed deer.  Prior to the hunt, you will spend a day at the range shooting your rifle and practice with a simulated hunt.  The hunt will occur in September on a private ranch west of Meeteetse.  Kids under 18 participating in the program must be accompanied by a parent or a designated chaperone at all events.

No previous hunting experience is necessary.  In fact, we are looking for first-time hunters!   All equipment including a firearm, ammunition and hunter orange can be provided.  Applications are due by April 12. Spots are limited; apply today

For more information, call Tara Hodges at the Cody Game and Fish office 307-527-7125.

At the first scheduled event, the “range day”, hunters are introduced to their mentors and then given instruction on marksmanship and shooting competency.  Participants begin shooting with .22 caliber long rifles before advancing to .243 rifles.

During the simulated hunt, hunters practice shooting a life-size deer target from various shooting positions and yardages.  The simulated hunt helps to prepare the hunter for the fall hunt and allows the mentor and hunter to work together in a simulated hunting scenario prior to the actual hunt.
