ABOUT US

The purpose of this section of the laboratory is to aid biologists in determining age structure and population dynamics for different species of Wyoming game animals. This information is utilized in setting of seasons and number of licenses assigned. Teeth are received from hunters and biologists within certain areas and analyzed using a technique called cementum annuli tooth aging. Approximately 5,000 teeth samples from nine species (deer and elk comprising the majority of the teeth) are received every year.  The tooth aging section will also age teeth for hunters harvesting animals outside the Department’s study area for $25 (contact the lab at 307-721-1926). Ages are listed on the WGFD website
