Youth Invited to Outdoor Day

CODY - Youth from across the Bighorn Basin are invited to participate in the upcoming Paintrock Hunter Mentor Outdoor Day-an exciting and fun filled day of outdoor activities on August 17 at Medicine Lodge State Archaeological Site in Hyattville.

Worland Game Warden and Paintrock Hunter Mentor Program coordinator Matt Lentsch said that the Outdoor Day will offer youth an opportunity to try out a variety of outdoor activities that otherwise, they might never have the chance to try.

“This is a great opportunity for kids to get outside, have fun, and learn a new outdoor skill,”Lentsch said.

Participants will be divided into age groups, then rotate through six outdoor skills stations. Children ages 8 to10 willpractice archery and casting fishing poles, shoot air rifles, learn about stream insects, dissect owl pellets, and navigate through the “cutthroat trail”. Children ages 11 and 12 will shoot .22 rifles, learn about outdoor survival and blood trailing, sharpen their archery skills on a 3-D archery course, practice fly casting, and learn about radiotelemetry. Ages 13 and over will electro fish, participate in a simulated big game hunt, learn to ride and pack horses,learn how to call elk, and investigate a wildlife poaching crime scene.

The event, co-sponsored by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department and Wyoming State Parks, will take place atMedicine Lodge State Archaeological Site in Hyattville.

Participants should be prepared to spend the entire day outdoors, bring plenty of drinking water and sunscreen, and wear comfortable shoes. Lunch will be provided.

Participants must pre-register and check-in between 7:30 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. on August 17; activities will begin at 8:30 a.m. and end at 4:30 p.m. in the afternoon.

Deadline for preregistration is August 3. Those that register by August 3 will receive a free T-shirt at check-in. To obtain a registration form, contact the Cody Game and Fish office at 307 527-7125 or the Worland Game Warden Station at 307 347-3650. A $10.00 fee is due at time of registration. Space is limited to 24 participants per age group and will be filled on a first registration basis.
