Game and Fish Welcomes
New Fisheries Biologist

3/19/2012

CODY - The Wyoming Game and Fish Department welcomes new fisheries biologist Sam Hochhalter to the Cody Region.

As a fisheries biologist for the east side of the Cody Region, Hochhalter will manage the Bighorn River and all waters on the west slope of the Big Horn Mountains that drain into the Bighorn River.

Hochhalter is excited about managing fisheries populations and working with Game and Fish. “I like the diversity of fisheries the Big Horn Basin has to offer,” he said. “I have the unique opportunity to manage cold-water species in high mountain lakes in the Big Horns, down to the warm-water fish species in the Bighorn River and Big Horn Lake.”

Hochhalter, a Montana native, moved to Cody from Anchorage, Alaska, where he was a fisheries biologist for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game for four years. Previously he worked as a fisheries technician for five years for the U.S. Forest Service, the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Department, and the Idaho Department of Fish and Game.

Hochhalter earned a bachelor’s degree in fish and wildlife management from Montana State University and a master’s degree in aquatic ecology from Utah State University.

Hochhalter is an outdoor enthusiast who enjoys hunting, biking, skiing, and climbing. “The outdoor recreational opportunities in the Cody area were a big draw to us,” he said. Hochhalter lives in Cody with his wife, Syringa, and their 2-year-old son, Finnegan.
