Walleye Organization Helping Wyoming Fish for All Species
North Platte Walleyes Unlimited

6/30/2014

CASPER - Several hundred Wyoming youngsters, along with their parents have cast, caught fish and reaped poles for future outings thanks to North Platte Walleyes Unlimited.

The Casper-based fishing organization has donated around 1,000 rod and reel outfits, along with hooks, weights, other tackle and many life jackets to the Forever Wild Families program and other fishing events and schools around the state in 2014.

“It’s all about getting Wyomingites out fishing,” said Jay Zastrow, NPWU president of his organization’s outreach. “We want to get poles in the hands of kids and their parents and mentors to enjoy this great pastime we have here in the Cowboy State.”

Wyoming’s Forever Wild Families program was the beneficiary of 100 of the fishing outfits. The program, which introduces families to hunting, fishing and the outdoors, outfitted participants in Cody and Laramie on mentored fishing trips this spring.

In addition, seven fishing events from Saratoga to Dubois have received rods and reels, with the Kids Fishing Derby at Yesness Pond in Casper June 7 receiving the top donation of 300 spincast outfits. On July 12, 158 young anglers at the Boysen State Park Fishing Derby will reap the NPWU’s generosity. The fishing organization will also donate 78 tackle boxes to the event.

“The NPWU thanks Game and Fish Commissioner Aaron Clark for believing in our mission to help Wyoming youth and local charities by granting us a commissioner’s big game tag last year to auction/raffle,” Zastrow said.

He added the organization’s fund-raising dinner also significantly helps their outreach, thanks to the “500 generous attendees.”

“The success of the Forever Wild Families program is due in large part to the North Platte Walleyes Unlimited generosity and their support for taking families fishing, not just youth,” said Tasha Sorensen, statewide coordinator of the Game and Fish program.

North Platte Walleyes Unlimited has around 200 members and has been promoting fishing in Wyoming for more than 20 years.
