March 1 is Deadline for Conservation Stamp Art Contest

1/27/2014

CHEYENNE - Artists are alerted that the deadline to submit artwork for the conservation stamp art contest is March 1. The March 1 deadline is a change from the March 15 deadline of previous years. The sauger, one of Wyoming’s native game fish species, is the subject for the 2014 contest. The annual event is now in its 31st year.

Each year the Game and Fish selects a species to be the subject of the competition and eventually appear on more than 100,000 conservation stamps. The winning artist also receives a cash award of $3,500. Second place receives $1,500, third $750.

The competition is open to professional artists. Entries for the contest must be postmarked and/or delivered to Game and Fish headquarters in Cheyenne by March 1. The Game and Fish typically receives 50-80 entries each year. The contest will culminate with judging in Cheyenne on April 11, 2014. The winning artwork will appear on the 2015 Wyoming conservation stamp.

Information including rules and deadlines on the Conservation Stamp Art Contest is on the Game and Fish website wgfd.wyo.gov. Printed rules and entry forms are also available and will be mailed to requesting artists. Artists may also choose to review the rules and use the forms on the Game and Fish website.

In Wyoming, sauger (Sander canadensis) are native to streams east of the Continental Divide. It isfound today in the Wind-Bighorn River drainage and in the Tongue and Powder River drainages. In the early 1900s it was found in the North Platte River, but is no longer found in that drainage. Wyoming’s state record sauger was caught out of Boysen Reservoir in Fremont County in 2007 and weighed 7 lbs 8 oz.
