Wyoming Game and Fish Department Reviews Herd Unit Objectives

5/6/2013

LANDER - The Wyoming Game and Fish Department is holding public information meetings in Lander and Riverton to discuss herd management objectives for the Lander moose herd, and the Project deer and pronghorn herds. The Lander moose herd consists of hunt areas 2, 30, and 39, and the Project herds consist of deer hunt areas 157, 170, and 171, and pronghorn areas 97 and 117.

Jason Hunter, regional supervisor said that the meetings will provide an opportunity for sportsman, landowners, and other interested parties to provide input on the management of the herds. “These meetings will focus on herd unit objectives, which are population targets the Game and Fish sets for each herd,” Hunter said. “Specifically, we are proposing the Project deer and pronghorn herds be managed for hunter and landowner satisfaction rather than number of animals on the ground.”

Although the Game and Fish review herd unit objectives every year when hunting seasons are set, herd objectives will be formally evaluated in five year intervals to ensure a high level of public involvement. In addition to the hunting public, landowners and federal agencies are also asked to provide input since they manage the habitat big game uses throughout the year.

The meetings will begin 6:00 p.m. with a short presentation on the history and status of each herd unit followed by a question and answer session and public comment period. The moose herd unit will be discussed at the Lander meeting and the deer and pronghorn herd units will be discussed at the Riverton meeting.

Locations are as follows:

May 8 - Lander - Fremont County Library, 451 N. 2nd St.
May 9 - Riverton - Fremont County Library, 1330 W. Park St.
