Game and Fish to Begin Grizzly Bear Trapping in Dubois Area

5/6/2013

LANDER - As part of ongoing efforts to monitor the population of grizzly bears in the Yellowstone Ecosystem, the Wyoming Game & Fish Department will conduct research trapping operations in the Dubois area from May 13 through June 14.

All areas where trapping is being conducted will have major access points marked with warning signs. It is critical that all members of the public heed these signs.

Monitoring of grizzly bear distribution and other activities are vital to the ongoing recovery of grizzlies in the Yellowstone Ecosystem. To attract bears, biologists utilize natural food sources such as fresh road-killed deer and elk to capture grizzly bears with snares and/or culvert traps. Trapped animals are immobilized, processed, released on site, and monitored in accordance with strict protocols developed jointly by the Wyoming Game and Fish, U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, and the Interagency Grizzly Bear Study Team.

When bear trapping activities are being conducted for research purposes, the vicinity of the site will be posted with bright warning signs to inform the public of these activities. The signs will be posted along the major access points to the trapping site. It is important that the public heed these signs and not venture into posted areas.

For more information regarding grizzly bear trapping efforts, call the department’s Lander regional office at 307-332-2688.
