John Emmerich Retires After 34 Years of Service

CHEYENNE - John Emmerich deputy director of external operations has retired after more than 34 years of service with the Game and Fish Department.

As deputy director his duties included serving as Game and Fish liaison with the legislature and cooperating agencies, such as the Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. He also was the overseer of the department’s habitat protection program.

Emmerich began his Game and Fish career in 1978 as a wildlife biologist in Gillette. He transferred to Hanna in 1979 and later that year became biologist in Lander. He was promoted to wildlife management coordinator in Cody in 1992 and to assistant wildlife division chief in Cheyenne in 2003 before being promoted to deputy director in 2006.

In 1988 Emmerich was named Wildlife Division employee of the Year and in 2005 received the Director’s Award. In 2010 he received the Seth Gordon award which is an award given by the Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies recognizing lifetime achievements of administrators for outstanding work with natural resources.

A Hastings, Neb. native, Emmerich attended the University of Wyoming where he earned a bachelor’s degree in wildlife management. After spending four years in the U.S. Navy as an officer he enrolled at South Dakota State University earning a master’s degree in wildlife biology.

Game and Fish director Scott Talbott said, “John has a long and distinguished career demonstrating his dedication to the wildlife resource and his commitment to serving the sportsmen and public of Wyoming. His positive approach, can - do attitude and innovation, will be missed by all.”
