Wyoming Wildlife Photo Contest Issue Now on Newsstand

2/19/2013

CHEYENNE - An image of a flicker cleaning a nest cavity in Yellowstone National Park by Red Lodge, Mont., photographer Shawn T. Stewart was judged best in show for the 2012 Wyoming Wildlife photo contest. The February 2013 issue of Wyoming Wildlife featuring contest winners in all categories is now on newsstands.

Jonathan Bradley was awarded first place for his photo of northern shovelers in flight in the wildlife category. Other winners in the various categories were: scenic/pictorial, Angelique Rea, Cheyenne, for her scenic of Elk Mountain; flora, Tim Doolin, Sheridan, for his image of lupine in the Big Horn Mountains, and in the recreation category, Jon LeVasseur, Evanston, for his photo of rafters on the Snake River.

In addition to the grand prize and category winners, second- and third-place winners are also featured along with numerous honorable mention photographs.

Wyoming Wildlife editor Chris Madson said the images submitted for the 2012 contest, were as in previous years, of very high quality.

“A sixtieth of a second or less— that’s how much time a still photograph catches,” Madson said. “It’s a span of time we lose in the blink of an eye. More often than not, the unique character in an outstanding image lasted no longer than that— the blink of an eye. It may have been an unusual behavior, a rare or seldom-seen animal, a sudden change in weather, or trick of light, but whatever it was, it’s gone before most of us really recognize it. The photographers in this competition were there to capture a few of those special split-seconds for the rest of us to enjoy. My hat is off to them.”

To be eligible, all photos must have been taken in Wyoming. Categories for 2013 will again be wildlife, scenic/pictorial, recreation, and flora.

Wyoming Wildlife is available on newsstands or by subscribing at 800-710-8345 for $12.95 for a year.
