Deer Hunt Area 157 Now Positive for Chronic Wasting Disease

10/29/2012

LANDER - Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), a fatal neurological disease of deer, elk, and moose has been discovered in deer hunt area 157 near Riverton, resulting in that area being included in the list of CWD positive deer hunt areas.

Lander Regional Wildlife Supervisor Jason Hunter said this case involved a mule deer doe that was harvested in early October in deer area 157 northwest of Pavillion. “This is the first time we have found CWD in this hunt area,” Hunter said. “However, the occurrence of CWD in area 157 is not a huge surprise. CWD has been documented in area 120, about 17 miles northeast of where this animal was harvested.”

Lander regional personnel continue to collect CWD samples from deer and elk through hunter field checks, check stations, and other means in order to get a better understanding of the disease prevalence and distribution. Department personnel collect and analyze more than 3,000 CWD samples annually throughout the state.

Chronic Wasting Disease is not known to be a disease of humans and presents no known public health significance at this time. Nonetheless, to avoid risk, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that people avoid eating meat from deer and elk that either look sick or test positive for CWD.
