HIP Permit Needed to Hunt Doves

08/20/2012

CHEYENNE - The hunting season for mourning doves will be opening Sept.1, and hunters are reminded that along with their bird licenses they must also have their Harvest Information Permit, commonly referred to as a HIP permit.

The HIP permit has been a federal requirement for all migratory bird hunters since 1998, and is sometimes overlooked by dove hunters. Although the permit is federal, one is needed for each state a hunter is licensed to hunt migratory birds, including snipe, rails, cranes, ducks, and geese. Youth under 14 who are not required to buy a license do not need the HIP permit, but the permit is needed by holders of pioneer and lifetime bird licenses.

In Wyoming, the permit is free online at wgfd.wyo.gov or $.50 at license agents and Game and Fish offices. To obtain the permit, hunters are required to identify the migratory species hunted the previous year and the approximate number harvested.

Wyoming’s mourning dove season is Sept. 1 – Nov. 9 with a daily limit of 15 and 30 in possession.
