Deadline to Apply for Youth Conservation Camp is May 18

CHEYENNE - Wyoming youth age 14-17 who would like to spend a week this summer learning outdoor skills and participating in shooting sports, fishing, canoeing, hiking, rappelling, and other outdoor activities are invited to apply for the 2012 Wyoming Game and Fish Department Conservation Camp. The deadline to apply this year is May 18 – more than a week earlier than last year’s deadline.
The camp is free and will be held July 29-Aug. 3 at the Whiskey Mountain Wildlife Conservation Camp located near scenic Trail Lake, ten miles southeast of Dubois.
Camp coordinator Jim Dawson said the camp is balanced with outdoor, indoor, and hands-on activities. Most of theactivities are done in groups with some opportunity to work alone.
“Campers work as a team all week,” says Dawson. “Campers make new friends and learn outdoor skills that will stay with them for a lifetime.”
Campers stay in cabins and eat in a dining hall. Most equipment is furnished, but campers do need to bring personal gear including sleeping bags and appropriate footwear for hiking as well as rain gear and cool weather clothing.
To be eligible, students must live in Wyoming and be recommended by a teacher or youth leader. Most equipment is provided. Camp size is set at 40 openings.
The Game and Fish will accept applications through 5 p.m. on May 18. Application forms are available at any regional office of the Game and Fish, at the Game and Fish website or by calling the Game and Fish education section office at (307) 777-4538.
